Invisalign instead of Conventional Braces

Invisalign® could be the answer if you don’t want to wear conventional braces. Not only are conventional braces uncomfortable, but you may have to wear your wires and brackets for up to two years.

Unlike standard braces, Invisalign® is removed when eating and drinking and can sometimes take as little as six to eight months before your desired results are achieved. Conventional braces are never removed and can cause some additional issues including:

Demineralization

When food that is left on your teeth contacts bacteria, acid will be created. Acid prevents teeth from much needed calcium and phosphate causing white scars, or decalcification. These white squares outline the brackets where the braces used to be and can be extremely sensitive and while it isn’t the braces that cause the staining, people who don’t take great care when brushing and flossing may have to deal to those permanent little white squares that could lead to tooth decay.

Gingivitis

When the tissues surrounding your gums become red, swollen and inflamed gingivitis could be to blame. The beginning stages of gum disease can also cause tenderness and bleeding. Gingivitis is reversible, but if ignored could lead to the more serious periodontal disease. Gingivitis can happen to anyone, but taking care of your gums is imperative if you want to avoid gum disease.

Sensitivity

When the layers under your teeth become exposed because of gum recession, you could feel nerve pain. Sensitivity to cold and hot foods as well as sweet and sour foods could make you cringe. Even a breath of cold air could cause sensitivity. If you wear braces and have constant sensitivity, you may want to see your dentist or orthodontist. It is also important to brush every day to help prevent sensitive gums.

Plaque

That sticky film of colorless bacteria that is in your mouth is called plaque. Plaque is produced by a combination of food particles and saliva. Plaque and sugar combined will form a dangerous acid that can cause problems for teeth and gums. Although everyone has plaque people who wear braces need to be extremely careful, as plaque will form four to twelve hours after brushing making regular brushing imperative.
