Dental Care Tips For Everyone

Dental Care Tips are an important part of oral hygiene, and if you are unsure about proper oral health habits, the Glen Dental Center has some basic dental tips that you may find useful, especially if you have kids and teens that are spending too much time in the dental chair.

You may find it surprising, but according to Dr. Jeffrey Gilmor from Glen Dental in Glenview Illinois, many people shy away of the basics when it comes to dental care. Knowing basic dental care tips can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Brushing

Brush your teeth twice each day with a soft bristled toothbrush. Brush back and forth and up and down at a 45-degree angle and make sure that you use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste that has been recommended by Glen Dental or the American Dental Association.

Flossing

Floss before you brush to remove food particles and debris. Floss between every tooth curling around and in-between each tooth. It may seem time consuming, but it is important as skipping the floss could result in left over bacteria that will convert to acid, wearing down the enamel on your teeth. Leftover food and bacteria can also cause gum disease.

Eating Well

Watch your diet and eat plenty of vegetables. Celery is nature’s dental floss and is a great after meal snack that can help clean your teeth. Apples are another great choice if you like your fruit. If you can’t do without citrus, make sure you rinse or enjoy with a meal as citrus juices and fruits are very acidic, but good for your vitamin C consumption, as vitamin C is good for your gums.

Avoid sugar that helps plaque grown and watch the coffee, tea and red wine as it can stain your teeth. Skip the sticky foods, including dried fruit that can remain in between the crevices of your teeth. Potato chips, pretzels, white bread, and other starches will also remain on your teeth. Keep those foods to a minimum and rinse or brush after enjoying. Load your diet up with calcium rich foods to help keep the enamel on your teeth strong and healthy.

Regular Dental Checkups

Waiting until you have a dental emergency is like playing Russian roulette; you never know what Dr. Gilmor will say. Schedule regular dental appointments to nip tooth decay and gum disease in the bud. Preventative dentistry is better for your overall health and your budget.
